Students at an agricultural high school in Chicago recently helped build a golf course.
Students in the Chicago area have, for a while now, gotten exposure to agricultural equipment through a program made available in the city.
The Chicago High School for Agricultural Studies has been a part of the city's public school system since 1985. According to the school's website, it was established during a time when agricultural education was facing doubts about its future.
But, it would appear as though such education, thanks to the school, is thriving in Chicago. According to a recent report from the Chicago Tribune, students from the school helped create the city's newest public golf course after years of work.
Kayla Minor is a senior at the agricultural school who helped clean up and build the golf course. Minor told the Tribune that attending the school gives inner-city kids a leg up through providing training they might not normally experience.
"The only thing I ever did that was remotely close to that was I mowed the lawn once," Minor told the paper with regard to building the golf course. "The thing I enjoyed most was using the equipment. It was so different."
